About Me

I am Edith Dening. It is important to me that you feel safe and cared for in a supportive and accepting environment.

When dealing with adult individuals, couples, or younger children and teens, I understand the everyone needs to be respected and heard.  It is my belief that everyone has a story to tell, and has a desire to be connected to those around them.  At times life can be a struggle, and coping skills or strategies for positive communication are not working effectively.  Everyday challenges can be too much at times, and when there is no where to go, feelings of helplessness and being stuck can be very overwhelming.

At Songbird Counselling, my goal is to bring hope and change by giving you the tools to understand yourself and to provide you with strategies to communicate effectively.  Developing  self-awareness and self-compassion for oneself are critical steps towards inner healing and bringing about a fuller life.

About Hypnotherapy

Answering questions about Hypnotherapy

I became a certified clinical hypnotherapist in 2018, and since then have received my Master Clinician Level Certification.  The basic principle of hypnotherapy is that everyone has the inner capacity to heal and change their lives so they can live a much more empowered and fulfilling life. Michael Yapko (2015) states that “hypnosis helps people to “step outside” of their usual experience of themselves, allowing new associations to be formed in their inner lives (Essentials of Hypnosis, p. 18)”.

This is done by going into trance to help deepen an inner awareness of self. Trance is not a scary thing - we go naturally into trance 4 to 5 times a day. For example, when you are driving down the highway, at first when you get on the highway, you pay careful attention. After a while, you zone off - you are still aware but really are off in your “own world”. Another example would be when you are watching a movie - and you are so engrossed in the story, that your are unaware of what is going on around you.

A question that is often asked - can you make me do things I don’t want to do? The answer is that the client is always in control of the situation, even when in trance.  The goal is mind and body healing.

Usually, the hypnotherapy within the session is about 30 minutes, leaving time to talk before and after.
